What’s the Crack? Understanding Osteopathic Manipulation

You may have heard people describe osteopathic treatment as “bone cracking” or “having your back clicked.”This sound comes from a gentle technique we call manipulation, and I’d like to explain what it really involves—and how it fits into the care we provide at Bodyworks Health Clinic.
What is manipulation?
During manipulation, your osteopath applies a quick, precise movement to a joint. This can create a small “pop” or “click,” which is simply a tiny gas bubble releasing inside the joint fluid—similar to the sound when you open a fizzy drink. It is not bones rubbing together and is generally comfortable and safe when performed by a trained professional.
High-Velocity Thrust (HVT)
This specific type of manipulation is also called High-Velocity Low-Amplitude (HVLA).
High-velocity means the movement is delivered quickly.
Low-amplitude means the distance the joint moves is very small and kept well within its normal range.
The aim is to free a stiff or restricted joint and help it move more normally without forcing it beyond its natural limits.
Why we sometimes use it
Manipulation, including HVT, can:• Help restore normal joint movement• Reduce muscle tension and improve circulation• Relieve pain and support your body’s natural healing
One tool among many
Although manipulation can be very effective, it is not the only technique we use—and it isn’t always necessary.Your treatment plan is always tailored to you and may also include:• Soft-tissue massage and stretching• Gentle joint mobilisation• Exercise and rehabilitation advice• Postural and lifestyle guidance
I will always discuss which techniques are most appropriate for your condition and comfort level, and you are welcome to ask questions or let us know your preferences.
Your care, your choice
Whether or not manipulation is part of your session, our aim is the same: to help you move better, feel better, and stay active.
