I’m often asked about the difference between osteopathy and sports massage therapy, so I wanted to provide a quick overview.
Osteopathy is a regulated healthcare profession focused on assessing, diagnosing, and treating musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. It considers the whole body—not just the muscles and joints—recognising that all body systems (musculoskeletal, nervous, circulatory, and others) work together and can influence pain or dysfunction. Osteopaths take a detailed case history, perform a clinical examination, and develop a personalised treatment plan, which may include joint mobilisation, soft tissue techniques, stretching, and lifestyle advice. The aim is to restore mobility, reduce pain, and improve overall function.
Sports Massage Therapy focuses specifically on soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It uses targeted techniques to release tension, improve circulation, reduce soreness, and enhance recovery—particularly beneficial for athletes, active individuals, or those with postural strain.
In short, osteopathy addresses joint, soft tissue, and systemic factors in MSK health, while sports massage focuses solely on soft tissue care.
If anyone needs any help from an Osteopath or Sports massage therapist you should now be able to book the relevant treatment for whatever is giving you pain, or reduced function.
I very much look forward to welcoming you to the clinic.
Warmest regards
